IT’S an honour worthy of a 50-gun salute - the 50 civilian heads running armed forces’ schools overseas have been promoted from major to colonel, writes Julie Henry.
The promotion does not bring money, a newly-emblazoned epaulette; or better hardware to deal with the daily battlefield of the classroom. But it does give the head the right to more salubrious accommodation - what self-respeting colonel would slum it in a semi-detached?
The promotion has come about as a result of a general Armed Forces job study which reconsidered responsibilities attached to various posts.
Luckily there is no suggestion of a results-related element to the new status demoting headteacher Colonel Sir to a two-up, two-down in the event of a dip in performance.
