LAURA BOWDEN, director of the Equity Group in Scotland, described the route to mainstreaming for those with learning difficulties as a journey “which sometimes goes smoothly, sometimes not”. She added: “Whatever happens, we are travelling in the right direction.”
Ms Bowden, speaking at the annual conference of the Equity Group, warned: “Full inclusion of children with disabilities in mainstream can and does work, but only where there is co-operation, training and a reallocation of resources.
“Only when that happens will inclusion work, and only where it works every time will we all be doing our jobs properly.”
