The overlooked link between the cover story in TES Friday and the front-page picture highlighting the proposed closure of Oldfield first school (TES, April 10) is that the school that three-year-old shepherd, Phillip Mellin, attends one day a week is none other than the very school that Bradford Council intends to shut.

Phillip and children like him will have to travel miles from the rural hills to which they belong, many winding up in suburban schools. Villages such as Oldfield should not be allowed to disintegrate.
