For the sake of argument

We were disappointed that a woman encouraging girls to “argue their corner” should be so quick to criticise students promoting feminist causes (“Girls can win the war of words. Discuss”, Comment, 10 January).

Ironically, given Claire Fox’s emphasis on “well researched argument”, many of her assertions were unfounded. We formally support No More Page 3, not the #losetheladsmags campaign. Neither campaign advocates an outright ban; instead they call for pornographic images to be appropriately placed.

Young women’s political efforts have long been discredited by the term “fashionable”. We protest not because it is “fashionable” (our campaign against Tesco predates the national movement), nor because we live in a “culture of complaint”. “A few topless pictures” are a symptom of a culture in which women are bombarded with images that imply they should be defined by their appearance. Not only do such images damage self-esteem, they skew the entire societal perception of women. Even the most “resilient” are affected, not just “sensitive wilting violets”.

Women have been forced to accept institutionalised sexism for too long. To challenge it is no display of vulnerability, rather one of frustration and disgust. By discouraging us from speaking out, Fox is effectively promoting the censorship that she so stridently condemns.
