STAFF in children’s homes will be compelled to undergo training leading to a specialist qualification - in an bid to throw off residential care’s scandal-ridden image.

Studies show that two-thirds of care home workers in England and Wales have no relevant qualification. Ministers are thought to favour a minimum vocational qualification at NVQ level 3 (equivalent to an A-level) as a condition of registration as a residential childcare worker.
