Personal finance will become part of the curriculum when functional maths tests are introduced in 2010. The Britannia Building Society is offering to help schools prepare.

The society’s financial education programme is presented by 86 trained staff volunteers in schools across Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire, and will eventually be extended nationwide.

The programme consists of 30-minute workshops and activities, designed for 14-to 16-year-olds, which will cover financial jargon, opening an account, banks, building societies, interest, budgeting and credit.
