A private boys’ school in Middlesex has declared itself the first “climate-neutral” school in the world after agreeing to compensate for the greenhouse gases it helps produce.

Hampton school has reduced the carbon dioxide it produces by a fifth through schemes such as recycling kitchen waste and paper. It has then been offsetting the remaining 700 tonnes of carbon dioxide its pupils produce each year by donating pound;7.50 a ton to the charity Climate Care.

The charity invests in tree planting, energy-efficient fuel and low-energy light bulbs.
