IT is disappointing that George Black (“Leadership college is a ‘shambles’ ”, TES, December 6) should claim that school leaders have so little independence of thought and action.

In reality, their ambition and determination to enhance and develop already high standards of leadership in our schools makes them active and enthusiastic partners with the National College for School Leadership and vital to its continuing success.

The profession understands the importance of excellent leadership and it is engaging with us nationally, locally and at an individual school level.

Together we are bringing about a forceful momentum that will make a real difference to professional careers and children’s learning.

The opportunities that the college provides are in response to dialogue with the profession and that is why we are receiving its input and involvement in every aspect of our activity.
