Greening U-turn over plans to remove parent governors
Parents are part of the solution in turning around under-performing schools, says education secretary

Justine Greening has signalled a U-turn over the government’s plan to allow academies to drop parent governors.

Taking questions from the Commons education select committee this morning, the education secretary, was asked whether removing elected parents from boards of academy trust would be a matter she was prepared to reconsider.

“It is,” she replied. “I don’t think we should be saying MATs don’t need to have parents. Parent governors play a vital role actually.”

She said part of the solution in turning around under-performing schools was to get parents more engaged in running them.

"I don't think we should proceed with that [proposal]," she concluded.

Her comments come in contrast to the position set out in the schools White Paper published earlier this year which said: “We will expect all governing boards to focus on seeking people with the right skills for governance, and so we will no longer require academy trusts to reserve places for elected parents on governing boards.”
