UNITED STATES: Stagnant levels of spending on education are at odds with economic growth and skyrocketing enrolment, says a report from the National Education Association, the largest US teachers’ union. Average salaries for teachers have risen less than 1 per cent in real terms over the past decade, and overall spending on education rose 3.6 per cent last year at a time when average prsonal incomes in the US increased by 5.9 per cent, the union says.
In 24 states and the district of Columbia, teacher salaries actually declined over the past 10 years when adjusted for inflation. “The US public has said public education should be our nation’s number one priority, these statistics prove otherwise,” said NEA president Bob Chase.
