THE Holocaust is to be officially remembered in Britain for the first time on January 27, 2001, and ministers are hoping the annual event will provide a focus for schoolwork.

Schools are already required to cover the Holocaust as part of the national curriculum. But the Government says the day could provide additionalopportunities for promoting informal learning.

In a consultation document published last year, Home Secretary Jack Straw suggested schools and other organisations specialising in Holocaust education and human rights issues could produce

relevant materials, such as videos, booklets, tapes and websites.
