Liverpool’s oldest school, Garston Church of England primary, is to merge with two neighbouring Catholic schools. Rick Widdowson, the headteacher, said it was likely Garston would create a federation with Holy Trinity and St Francis of Assisi, because of falling rolls. A joint faith school was also an option. He said: “We’re delighted, because the threat of closure hanging over us is now removed.”

A final decision will be taken by Liverpool city council in the autumn.
