Capital funding of pound;11million to make mainstream schools more accessible to pupils with disabilities has been announced.
The scheme follows October’s Green Paper Excellence for all children - meeting Special Education Needs which pledged to improve access. All 147 local education authorities that bid will receive a share of pound;10million. A further pound;1m was allocated to grant-maintained schools.
The money will be used to install ramps, handrails and lifts and improve facilities such as toilets and medical rooms in more than 1,100 schools.
Special projects include a scheme to re-integrate children into mainstream school after a temporary disability.
