Schools for specialists unveiled;In brief

THE Government this week announced 35 new specialist schools - 10 arts, three language, seven sport and 15 technology colleges.

There are now 365 specialist schools. Each has raised pound;100,000 private-sector sponsorship and prepared a three-year development plan. In return they have received a pound;100,000 capital grant, plus pound;100 per pupil per year for three years.

The latest group includes a school based in an education action zone - Westleigh High in Wigan, which will become a technology college in September.
