KS 3-4 This should be the ideal motivator for those struggling to make KS34 investigations interesting. Set the scene, read the passages, get pupils to identify the variables: temperature, light levels, electromagnetic field strengths, microwave levels; and do some good scientific observational work (using eyes, ears, skin temperature - and blood pressure), using a sensitive thermometer and a compass; show them how to use microwave detectors and ways to measure electrostatic fields (gold-leaf electroscope), or magnetic fields (search coil or hall probes). Then get down to the nearest haunted house (or generate hotcold spots in the lab and hide some large magnets). Mind over matter might suggest that a cold spot does not mean a ghostly presence - good scientists clarify their analysis and make their evaluations.
