Her visit coincided with the announcement that the school year from September 2001 will be National Science Year - following in the footsteps of te National Year of Reading and the current Maths Year 2000. The year, targeted at 10 to 19-year-olds, will involve putting working scientists in schools as well as national competitions. Ms Smith said: ‘We want to create a buzz around science.’.
