* The director of the Scottish Catholic Education Service warns this week that “it is undoubtedly more difficult to provide a distinctive form of education in a shared campus context . . . where (the schools) live together as neighbours, but not as one family”.

Writing in this week’s TES Scotland, Michael McGrath lays the accent on the “distinctiveness” of Catholic schools. While he acknowledges that many of their characteristics can be found in other schools, he says that the “spiritual formation” of pupils and commitment to Catholic teaching made the Church’s schools unique.

Mr McGrath calls on those who are “suspicious and intolerant” to recognise that faith-based education is “highly effective and highly valued”.
