(Photograph) - Deputy Health Minister Mary Mulligan (above) and Deputy Education Minister Nicol Stephen launched the Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit at St Mary’s primary in Bathgate last week. The unit will be headed by Margaret McGhie of Learning and Teaching Scotland who has specialised in health education and personal and social education. Mr Stephen said that he expected every school to become health promoting and the new unit would give added momentum. Mrs Mulligan, a former chair of the parliamentary education committee, said the concept would involve developing “lifestyle education”, encompassing diet and physical activity.
