The Scottish Office points to the extra pound;8 million for FE in 1998-99, of which pound;5 million comes from anticipated tuition fees for higher education students.

Another pound;10.7 million will be distributed to colleges beyond the pound;276 million already announced - pound;7.8 million for capital and other specific projects, pound;2.05 million for “strategic initiatives” to promote co-operation and rationalisation, pound;500,000 for contingencies and pound;400,000 to be allocated from the core grant.

Colleges continue to insist that the core grant which forms the bulk of their funding will fall by 1.5 per cent if the contentious tuition fee income is discounted.
