A school in Lincolnshire has revealed that it uses hand-held metal detectors to screen pupils for knives, drugs and mobile phones. Tollbar business and enterprise college, in New Waltham, near Grimsby, said it had used the devices on a handful of occasions since piloting them last September. Headteacher David Hampson emphasised that such use was only a precautionary measure because the school did not have problems with either drugs or weapons. Metal detector companies say that a handful of other schools - private and state-funded - have bought their products, but refused to identify the schools.
