KENYA: More than half of the pupils who completed primary school last year will not get into public or private secondaries this year because there are no places available. Over the past five years more than a million have been denied senior schooling.
This year education minister Kalonzo Musyoka instructed Kenyan secondary heads to admit only 219,000 pupils out of 81,000. Some 262,000 pupils will therefore have to stop their education, 26,567 more than last year. Most entrants will go to government-funded schools, while 22,000 will go private.
Many more children do not even make it to the end of primary school. More than 400,000 first-years in 1993 dropped out before they could sit the primary exit exam last year.
