Words like “dosser” or “bag lady” are easily thrown around, but the reality of homelessness is often hidden. The superb “Housemate” packs from Shelter stir pupils into thought and provide much useful information. For key stage 2, there’s a set of fine colour photographs, with activities involving empathy and investigation, and the dispelling of negative stereotypes. At key stage 3 and 4 deeper issues are explored: the meaning of “home”; the nature of housing need; the varied experiences that make people homeless. Both packs make it clear that a misfortune that could happen to anyone should be understood by everyone. One primary and secondary “Housemate” pack is free to each school.
