Doug McAvoy, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, has proposed a system of self-inspection of schools by teachers. Writing in the Fabian Society's magazine, Mr McAvoy said that, despite enormous investment, the Government's inspection scheme had yielded no results. Unless Labour offered a credible alternative, it risked being "left behind in the education debate", he said.
