I would have been happier with Warwick Mansell’s analysis of the impact of Ofsted (“Lift this crushing weight of scrutiny”, TES, June 6) and his plea for closer scrutiny of the figures used to justify its new inspection regime if he hadn’t appealed to the “common sense position”, which is, in my experience, the only tactic worse than spinning lies, damned lies and statistics. In Bertrand Russell’s words, this “metaphysics of savages” has even less substance than a percentage plucked out of context.
