Your subject page item, “Question? Ask a librarian” (September 3), brought a wry smile to my face. The new service, Ask Scotland, to which it refers, ”`allows users to pose any question to a Scottish librarian and receive a fully-researched answer within 48 hours”. It also has a “live chat function which allows people to connect directly to a librarian and ask a question in real time”.
What a shame that Scotland’s leading educational newspaper failed to mention that, throughout the country, school librarians offer these very same services. Staff and students in educational establishments across Scotland have the services of a school librarian at their disposal each and every day.
As your report rightly said, librarians are “experts at sorting through information and finding, organising and evaluating what people need from a mass of credible sources”. School librarians are no different in this regard and are a vital resource in schools, both for staff and students.
