RENFREWSHIRE says moves to improve maths teaching in primary and early secondary, including the introduction of subject setting as early as primary 4 in some schools, have made a real difference.
National test results show a rise from 71.3 per cent to 74.7 per cent last session in those achieving their expected attainment level.
Other measures, in line with the 1997 HMI report on 5-14 maths, have included a reduction in teaching groups, better structured lessons, an increased pace of learning and an integral place for mental maths.
