Setting the right benchmark

“Schools require more sophisticated analysis to point the way forwards and manage the improvements that may be required,” says Bruce Malone, headteacher of St Andrew’s Secondary in Glasgow’s east end and a member of the standards group.

“What is most relevant to me is how my school compares with those in similar circumstances, where the school is and where it needs to get to,” Mr Malone said.

St Andrew’s is increasingly seen as a benchmark. This year more than 20 per cent of Standard grade pupils gained five or more Credit awards against 13 per cent last year. Ninety per cent achieved five or more S grade passes overall against 72 per cent last year and a Glasgow average of 79 per cent.
