THE THEME of job insecurity was relentless. Jewel and Esk Valley College won approval for an attack on uncontrolled classroom observation of lecturers. CLA policy is that the practice should only be undertaken by HMI during an inspection or during “lesson crits” for teacher training.

The conference also voiced strong opposition to the use of agency lecturers. Penny Gower said she earned pound;14.50 an hour at Falkirk College and had no employment rights. Falkirk had said that agency staff were not to be trained because this would imply an employee relationship.

“We should act to remove this open sore,” Ms Gower said. “We don’t want agency contracts, we want lecturers’ jobs.”
