YOUR article “Blunkett’s historical restoration” (TES, July 2) claims that the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority wanted “Shakespeare to be dropped from the compulsory study for 11 to 14-year-olds”. This is not true.

The current national curriculum for English requires two Shakespeare plays to be studied during key stage 3 and 4. Shakespeare is tested at the end of key stage 3, guaranteeing that at least one play is studied. The QCA’s advice on March 31 reaffirmed the requirements.
