Shetland councillors are to delay the appointment of a new head of education for at least six months, despite the imminent retirement of Alex Jamieson. After interviewing six candidates for the pound;65,000 a year post, the council decided to make an interim appointment. Bill Manson, its education spokesman, said the pay package may not have been sufficient to attract the right candidate. Morgan Goodlad, the chief executive, said more time was needed to consider the future of the education department.

Significantly, the council recently appointed a temporary head of social work, on a daily consultancy fee of pound;700. A recruitment agency has been hired to seek out an interim head of education, probably on the same terms. Mr Jamieson will stay on meantime.
