Position: Headteacher of Bosmere junior school, Havant, Hampshire
Q If you had David Blunkett’s budget what would your priority be?
A I would double teachers’ salaries. This would attract the best people. Don’t waste time making teachers jump through performance-related hoops for pound;2,000. Stop pouring millions into Ofsted inspections.
Q If you had a blank cheque for your own school what would you buy?
A I would use the pound;20,000 it costs to inspect us to employ a teacher to support able children. Last year 1,00 11-year-olds gained level 6 in maths - this means they are four years ahead of where they are expected to be. Three of them were at Bosmere. I could do an awful lot for these pupils with an extra teacher. It would also free up other staff to help less able children.
Q What treat would you buy yourself?
A A daily lunchbreak, the time to sail my yacht - and reinstatement of retirement at 50.
