Name: Janice Rand

Position: Deputy head, Oakdale special school, Dukinfield, Tameside

Q If you had David Blunkett’s budget what would your priority be?

A To ensure that proper training and adequate resources are in place for teachers and support staff before initiatives are introduced. We need proper consultation instead of things being thrown at us. We’re tired of being stuck in the middle trying to make sense of everything.

Q If you had a blank cheque for your own school what would you buy?

A Two new rooms to redue class sizes. While we have only about 10 children per class, they have profound and multiple learning difficulties. We would also like to be able to buy in our own therapy services. A music therapist would be wonderful, as would a nurse, but we would settle for more physiotherapy.

Q What treat would you buy yourself?

A I would take all 60 staff to a luxurious health farm for a week.

Janice Rand was talking to Stephanie Northen. If you’d like to publish a shopping list for education, please e-mail friday@tes.co.uk
