Six miles north of Speke is the Dingle where Shorefields school has shown that comprehensives in tough areas - this is Liverpool 8 - can get good results. After years in single figures for top-grade GCSEs, the school hit 25 per cent last year - the target David Blunkett has given all schools The secret? “Student welfare, strong supervision throughout the day on the corridors, in the classroom, on the whole school site,” says the head, Phil McNulty. “And support for all staff. We work on four principles: hard work, achievement, respectabilty and personal fulfilment.”
