In your article “Name and shame game” (21 June), Jo Brighouse writes: “When it comes to early phonics acquisition Tom and Ben have a definite advantage over Siobhan and Aoife, while poor Ptolemy is always going to struggle to learn his alphabet.”

The only advantage Tom and Ben have is a teacher who understands English phonics. So here is a brief lesson in Irish (Gaeilge) phonics to even the score: the phoneme “aoi” is pronounced as “e”, so “Aoife” is simply pronounced “e-fah”. This is no more complex than teaching that “kn” is pronounced “n” and “ph” is pronounced “f”. This is a lesson I have taught to hundreds of adults since moving to the UK.
