Short measure

Across in Kirkintilloch, the East Dunbartonshire education convener and vice-convener must have known it was not going to be worth their while turning up for their education committee. They sent their apologies and council leader Charles Kennedy took the chair.

Kennedy was clearly not prepared to hang about either and managed to romp through the 33-page agenda in 12 minutes. Is this a record? The reporter from the Kirkintilloch Herald hardly had time to uncap his pen before the committee decided to move into private session to discuss a top-secret report on the boundary wall of Bearsden primary.

The scribe swears he will no longer take anything at face value in East Dunbartonshire. "The last time I was here I was told it would be a short meeting - and it lasted two-and-a-half hours."

In Perth and Kinross there is apparently nothing at all to detain councillors. The last education committee was scrapped for lack of business.
