If you are about to submit a bid for Learning and Skills Council funding, a word of advice if you want to get on the right side of Mark Haysom, its jargon-hating chief executive.
Avoid the term “NEET” when referring to people who are not in education, employment or training. This, he told MPs in the Commons recently, is “by far the worst” acronym in post-16 education.
Mr Haysom, who admits the LSC itself is guilty of waffle, will be taking comfort from the recent award which went to the council’s online Skills and Education Network Newsletter. It has been given the Plain English Campaign’s “crystal mark” seal of approval.
