Nearly 30 per cent of pupils in Japan, whose name translates as the Land of the Rising Sun, believe our star rises not in the east, but in the west.

Forty per cent also believe the sun goes round the Earth, according to a survey by the National Astronomical Observatory of 1,692 students aged nine to 13, writes Michael Fitzpatrick.
