Mrs Hall is expected to use her speech at the GSA annual conference to defend single-sex education. The latest Independent Schools Council census shows that the number of girls going to mixed private schools rose by 9 per cent between 2001 and 2004, compared to a 1.5 per cent increase at single-sex schools. Mrs Hall said evidence showed that girls performed better in single-sex classrooms, although she backed moves by some school towards co-ed sixth forms.
