A new website has been launched to help pupils understand the international slave trade.

Understanding Slavery was unveiled this week by John Prescott, the deputy prime minister. It provides lesson plans, videos and interactive animation, to trace the history of slavery, through British colonialism and American plantations. The website, launched in the run-up to the 2007 bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in the British empire, also encourages teachers to examine its legacies. www.understandingslavery.com
