Girl Tech. www.girltech.com

This site from the United States is dedicated to encouraging girls to use information technology, tackling the blokeishness of computers with such features as a “girl powered search engine” which filters out material unsuitable for children and focuses on links to Web sites that might be of particular use or inspiration for young women, with its own “girl-friendly” rating system.

Although the site aims to give girls greater confidence in using the Internet, it is notboringly worthy. The design and text are relentlessly chatty, with the emphasis being placed on education through entertainment.

There are features on successful women in work, women in sport, women inventors and games and puzzles customised for girls, all with an underlying message of encouragement.
