Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour party leader, has announced his new shadow cabinet after 12 resignations yesterday in the wake of the Brexit vote.

Pat Glass, a former government adviser on education, has been made shadow education secretary, replacing Lucy Powell.

Here are the key facts you need to know about her:

  1. In January 2016, Ms Glass was made shadow Europe minister. Previously she had been shadow childcare minister.
  2. She campaigned for the UK to remain in the EU and apologised after being recorded calling a voter a “horrible racist” when he complained about his Polish neighbours.
  3. She was a member of the Commons Education Select Committee from July 2010 until June 2015.
  4. Teachers and other educators may be cheered to hear that she worked for 25 years in senior posts in education. According to The Journal in Newcastle, she has been acting assistant director of education and head of inclusion services in Sunderland and was senior educational adviser for the Labour government’s national literacy and numeracy strategies in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
  5. Special educational needs and disability (SEND) is her specialist area of knowledge.
  6. She describes her main policy areas of interest as: education, child poverty, Europe, the environment and the economy of the North East.
