A SIXTH-form student drowned on Monday after falling into a fast-flowing river during a school trip to the Italian Alps. Alex Foulkes, 17, was trekking with classmates and teachers from Harrogate grammar, north Yorkshire, when he disappeared. A heatwave had melted snow on the mountain peaks, turning the river into a torrent. Alex was with 11 pupils and two teachers from the school staying at Val d’Aosta for a fortnight’s holiday.

The trip was organised by London-based Exodus Travel. Head Dr Philip Lambert said: “The school is still coming to terms with the news, which has stunned us all.”
