Government officials in charge of further education are seeking almost 1,300 “highly-skilled and experienced people” to help transform post-14 education and training in schools, colleges and work-training centres.

They would be part of 148 new local partnership teams and 35 economic development units working within the Learning and Skills Council’s local and regional offices.

All 4,700 staff at the council will have to reapply for their jobs or for the new posts in a radical shake-up of the council, Rob Wye, strategy director for the LSC confirmed this week.

“We also want new blood from outside the council,” he said.

Nine regional offices will have almost 1,500 staff, but LSC head-office staff will be slashed by half to 646. Around 1,300 mainly low-grade administrative posts would be axed, he said.

“This is not about creating new layers of bureaucracy but building teams with the skills and status to work alongside senior managers and leaders in localities and regions.”
