Skills - what’s in a word?

Does “skills supremo Stephen Marston” fully understand the effects of his long-term vision,” which are even now being felt by the FE sector? By skills” does he mean manual dexterity or is he including thinking and creativity in his definition?

As a lecturer in GCSE and A-level subjects, I have long been struggling to understand the growing (and unnecessary) conflict between studying academic subjects in college and doing vocational courses. Where schools are praised for providing an eclectic range of choice for their students, it seems that FE has to walk the sharp edge of the knife and bear the cuts of criticism, depending on the whims and preferences of the senior management and governors regarding vocational and academic qualifications. A truly inclusive sector would be happy to strive for excellence in both areas.
