FINDINGS from the Trust for the Study of Adolescence make uncomfortable, but essential reading for those involved professionally with teenagers.

Key Data on Adolescence 2003 illustrates new trends and the changing social circumstances with graphs, tables and text.

Authors John Coleman and Jane Schofield record a continuing increase in lone-parent families, a significant rise in sexually transmitted infections, a worrying increase in alcohol consumption, and a wide regional variation in suicide statistics. But, on a more positive note, there is some evidence of a decrease in youth crime and a marked improvement at A-level.
