Smoking on the rise

More than a third of French teenagers smoke - the highest proportion in the European Union - and the number is rising, according to a recent study.

The survey by an employees' national insurance fund and a health education group found that 35 per cent of a sample of 1,000 12-to 18-year-olds smoke. This figure is up 5 per cent over the previous year, almost equalling the adult rate of 36 per cent. But the figure is well below that for 1977, when 46 per cent of teenagers were smokers.
