OVER to Islington Green comprehensive school in London, famously rejected by the Blairs, where new superhead Marion Parsons is certainly shaking things up.

You’ll have heard of the 7.30am wake-up calls made by staff and governors to persistent latecomers. But Ms Parsons seems to have introduced another rather less welcome innovation (for the media, at least. She’ll probably be lauded by ministers for an entrepreneurial spirit befitting her pound;70,000-a-year salary).

People Management, the fortnightly magazine for personnel officers, visited the school recently, we learn, to take pictures of kitchen staff to illustrate its coverage of public-sector pay rises.

The hapless snapper was astonished to be given an ultimatum by the head: pound;100 up front for a maximum half-hour’s shooting or no pics. It seems a lot to ask for a picture of dinner ladies, but the magazine duly handed over the cash.
