Librarian Mrs Jennie Crawford scored a winner when she arranged for Bradford City players Wayne Jacobs and Gunnar Halle to present prizes for the school’s reading week. It was the culmination of an event she had organised which included quizzes, individual and group short story writing, bookshop visits, and research. Altogether there were 60 prizes, given by bookshops in the area, to be shared between 1,000 pupils at the comprehensive in Queensbury, six miles from Bradford. Mrs Crawford has been a football fan since her father took her to see Wolverhampton Wanderers as a gir. When she moved to Yorkshire she started following Bradford and since its rise to the Premiership has become a season ticket holder. As well as signing autographs at the presentation, the players gave the library copies of Pathway to Premiership, detailing the club’s rise. The school’s book stock will increase in September when government funding pays for the library to expand. Mrs Crawford planned the week because “it’s hard to get teenagers, and especially boys, interested in reading. The idea was to encourage them to read for information as well as pleasure.”
