A night in the life of Amy Johnson school, Hull

Pupils at Amy Johnson staged a spectacular closing number for their school with an ambitious theatrical performance of the musical Grease.

The Hull secondary is due to close in July as part of a reorganisation of local education, so they made sure that this year’s play was the biggest and best ever.

Teachers, support staff and a school governor joined the cast of 40 students to tell the story of Danny and Sandy’s romance at Rydell High, on a stunning set made by teachers at the school.

The show’s producer, and head of creative and performing arts, Trevor Taylor, says: “The show was planned as a vehicle to raise students’ self-esteem and provided them with a wonderful experience that will be remembered forever, to paraphrase one of the show’s songs.”

Amy Johnson is an inner-city school in chllenging circumstances, and the musical gave the school valuable media coverage, including a TV slot on a regional news programme. It also led to one pupil getting an audition with the Hull Youth Truck Theatre Company.

It was, says Mr Taylor, “a fitting finale to the end of an era”.
