Normally I ignore the uninformed dinosaurs of this world, but I felt the need to reply to John Linfoot (Letters, 30 September).

For the past 34 years I have worked in the hair and beauty sector - the last 12 in education - and I have enjoyed every aspect of my profession. Learners who have been trained well have every opportunity to be employed or set up their own business. There are over 250,000 people employed in the sector in England, and in most areas business is either holding its own or slightly growing.

Every qualification - whether GCSEs, A-levels, degrees or competency-based - is focused on preparing learners for the world of work, or should be.

Oh, and by the way, John, I have a degree, level 5 management qualifications, a large detached house (no mortgage), two new cars in the drive, support two children at university and don’t owe anyone a penny. Not bad for a hairdresser.

Margaret Butfield, Education consultant, Looe, Cornwall.
